Introduction
Welcome to the eighth blog post for the IMD3901 Term Project! This post will cover my group's progress in the past week, including modelling the raft environment.
Challenges
I did not have any major challenges faced this past week that I couldn't overcome. One issue I had was in the creation of the terrain of the raft environment. The way I had the faces set up was incredibly uneven and I realized that I needed to start over so that all the faces of the terrain could have a more consistent distance and have similar sizes the whole way through. I also had a minor issue in creating the navmesh of the terrain. I had the navmesh as its own object in maya, but the existing terrain as a reference. The first time I created the navmesh, I accidentally deleted some portions of the final terrain, leading to to have to start over again. Other than that, all my tasks were clear, and I got them all done within the timeline I gave myself.
Successes
My biggest success was the creation and finalization of the environment of the Raft in Autumn painting. To save on time I used various low-poly trees and nature that I got from sketchfab, while I modelled the terrain within Maya. I did my best to make it stay true to the original painting, and the texturing and lighting that will be done will add to that look. Another major success was the abudance of time I had to work on my tasks. In past weeks it's been very scarce, but I had multiple days where I could just sit back and focus on the creation of the raft environment, which was very helpful and something I didn't want to waste.
Time Spent on the Project
This was the most time I've spent on this project in any specific week. I would say I spent 7-8 hours creating/finishing the environment, including fixing some of the errors I had, and searching for the models to add into the environment.
Media
Our group's weekly discord call.
The basic model for the raft environment, with textures to be added later.
The navmesh for the raft environment. Simply the two sides of the river, plus a log to cross over.
